Day 1

July 4 (Wed), 7-10pm
Design and Alternative Process

Chiang Chen Studio Theatre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

The community is a huge centre of resources, from technique to materials. To merge new ideas with local production is not only an act of added value, but also an animation of the community. Designers nurture “alternative” design by re-thinking and reforming concept, materials, collaborative partners and mode of production.

Moderator:

Remi Leclerc
(Lecturer, School of Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic University)

Speakers:

Jeanne van Heeswijk
Initiates community projects by “urban curating”, bridging different areas of knowledge and stimulating equal participation

Jan Jongert
Establishing recycled material system and applying on interior design

Brian Lee
Case study on local designer-craftsman collaboration; new experiment with traditional technique

Joep van Lieshout
Known for his self-contained mobile homes, exploring alternative mode of living

Jeroen Verhoeven
Collaborating with traditional craftsmanship, reforming the production process

Day 2
July 5 (Thu), 2-5pm
From Cultural Research to Design

Chiang Chen Studio Theatre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

There is, admittedly, always a discrepancy between the way people live and the imagination of the professional sector. Taking community as its focus, designers and artists research on the unique background and living pattern of community. Not only is this a design process, but also an articulation of the values of everyday life.

Moderator:

Tsang Tak-ping, Kith
(Associate Professor, School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, co-founder of Para/Site Art Space and Habitus Design Space)

Speakers:

Yane Calovski
Re-creation based on vernacular culture

Daniela Paes Leao
Research with media on immigrant culture, reflecting on the relations between community and environment

Frederik Molenschot
From human-environment interface to design that combines crafts and technology

Benny Leong
Research on social innovation promising in terms of sustainable development

Day 3
July 6 (Fri), 7-10pm
Designing Social Participatory System
Chiang Chen Studio Theatre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Stretching the concept of design from object to the intangible system for participation. System does not necessarily mean policy and hardware. It can start with the smallest things in life, such as changing perception, and improvement on our immediate environment. The focus is on the interface that facilitates the engagement of the public.

Moderator:

Ip Iam-chong
(Teaching Fellow, Department of Cultural Studies, Lingnan University, co-founder of InMediaHK)

Speakers:

Dennis Kaspori
A virtual stock market on the regional “emotional values”, reflecting on perception of individual communities

Mauricio Corbalán
On-line role-playing chatroom to simulate public policy decision

Rudy J Luijters
Facilitating social coherence through gardening

Elena Simons
A social inventor who initiates fun projects in the society, with wildly imaginative interface

Target: Design students

Workshop 2: Design of “Hong Kong Index”

Instructor:

Dennis Kaspori

Time: July 7 (Sat) 2:30-5:30pm
Venue: HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity
Content:

The emergence of social software has changed the internet as a possible tool for the democratization of (urban) policy. It can be a way to activate the 'swarm intelligence' of citizens to generate well-informed opinions on urban topics. But how to index these individual opinions into a collective monitor? The workshop will lead participants to discuss, analyse on ways to reinstate citizenship as an active involvement into the appropriation of the urban landscape, and to create our own “Hong Kong Index”.
